Premodern Mana Sources

Paste a decklist. Every spell gets checked against the sources it needs to be cast on curve, counted from what your cards do in play rather than what their mana symbols say.

Why this is more accurate than a general mana calculator

A general calculator reads the colors printed on a card and trusts them. That works in formats with dual lands. It falls apart in Premodern, where a lot of the mana comes from cards whose printed colors are not what they produce.

Reflecting Pool prints five colors and makes none of them alone. Skycloud Expanse prints white and blue and makes neither by itself. Fetchlands find basics rather than duals, so a fetch is only a blue source if you are actually playing Islands. Rituals, Lotus Petal, Mox Diamond and the mana creatures are a real part of the mana and are not lands at all. Read any of that off the printed colors and the count is wrong, sometimes by a lot.

The reason a general tool cannot just fix this is that the fix is not a setting. It is 354 cards read one at a time. Every mana source legal in Premodern, 199 lands and 155 other sources, was checked against its oracle text and classified by hand, with the reasoning written down for each one. A calculator built from a card database inherits the database's answer, that Reflecting Pool makes five colors, because nothing short of reading every card tells it otherwise. That reading is the work, and it is what the count here is built on. The card-by-card breakdown is further down the page.

Put Sideboard on its own line to separate it. For a card you never hard-cast, write the cost you do pay in braces after the name, one pair of braces per symbol. 4 Foil {0} is a free cast; 4 Ray of Revelation {G} is its flashback cost, for a deck that casts it from the graveyard. If the real cost is lands rather than mana, name the land type instead: 4 Gush {Island}{Island}, 4 Snuff Out {Swamp}.

How to use this

  1. Get the list as plain text. MTGGoldfish: Download or Copy to Clipboard. MTGTop8: it is already text on the page, so select and copy. Moxfield: More, Export, Copy for MTGO. Typing it by hand is fine too.
  2. Paste it in. One card per line, quantity first: 4 Wasteland. Set codes and collector numbers are ignored, so 4 Wasteland (TMP) 335 works. Lines starting with // are skipped.
  3. Mark the sideboard by putting Sideboard on its own line before it. Sideboard cards are still checked, but they are labeled and they do not drive the headline number for a color, since you are not casting them in every game.
  4. Fix any card you never hard-cast by writing the cost you do pay in braces after the name, one pair of braces per symbol. 4 Foil {0} is a free cast; 4 Ray of Revelation {G} is its {G} flashback cost, for a deck that casts it from the graveyard rather than for {1}{W}. If the cost is lands rather than mana, name the type: 4 Gush {Island}{Island}, 4 Snuff Out {Swamp}. A split card has two costs the tool cannot weigh at once, so name the half that leans on your mana base: 4 Fire/Ice {1}{U}.
  5. Press Analyse, or just stop typing and wait a moment.
What everything on screen means
The color panels
The large number is your source count for that color. Under it is the largest requirement any maindeck spell puts on that color, and the card named is the one putting it there. Green clears, red does not. Colors with no sources and no requirement collapse to a single line.
Every spell, worst first
One row per card. Sources reads as have of needed, so 13 of 14 is one short. Reliable from is the turn your existing sources support the card: on curve means the turn it costs, and anything later is given as a turn number. Sorted by shortfall, so the card your mana base fails sits at the top.

Not castable on curve, but castable from turn four with the sources you already have. The turn is usually the more useful of the two, since a card you hold rather than curve out with is not really failing. Never means no turn inside the tables gets there at this land count.
needs both
One test with a condition per color. You need both at once, so the worse color decides the row and the later turn decides when it becomes reliable. Each requirement also goes up by one, since two things have to line up rather than one.

Sources not counted on turn one
Lands that make a color but could not have made it on turn one, each with the reason: entered tapped, needs mana paid into it, carries a condition. They count again from turn two, so a card short on turn one is often fine one turn later.
Worth knowing about this list
Facts about this list specifically. What your fetchlands can find in it, whether your conditional lands are switched on, which sources make restricted mana, and anything that changes what your other cards do.

If a color comes up short

Three options. Add sources of that color. Accept the later turn, if you hold the card rather than curve out with it. Cut the card, if it wants a mana base the rest of the deck cannot pay for.

Swapping a tapland for an untapped one moves the turn-one number and nothing else. From turn two both count the same.

How the numbers are worked out

Requirement numbers are Frank Karsten's, from his 2022 update. A spell counts as castable on curve when you have at least an 89 + M percent chance of drawing the colored sources for it by turn M, conditional on having drawn M lands. One-drops are held to 90 percent, four-drops to 93. He publishes the numbers at 20, 25 and 30 lands; the column here tracks your list and interpolates between them.

Turn one counts untapped sources only. From turn two everything counts, tapped or not, on the reasoning that a tapland could have been played a turn earlier. That one rule is why a card can miss on turn one and clear on turn two without the deck changing.

Multicolor costs are split, looked up per color, and each requirement raised by one. They report as one row rather than one per color. You need both at once, so the worse color decides the row and the later turn decides when it becomes reliable.

Falling short is a statement about timing rather than a failure. One colored pip wants 14 sources at 25 lands to be reliable on turn one, and 13 by turn two. Anything short is also given the turn your current sources do support it.

Gush is where mana costs stop describing the cost. Free-cast, it wants two Islands in play, and two blue sources is a different quantity: Skycloud Expanse and Tainted Isle both make blue and neither is an Island. Land types written as pips count against lands carrying that type, plus any fetchland that can find one. Snow-Covered Islands carry the type.

There are no dual lands in the format. A fetchland finds a basic, so its colors come from the rest of your list. Flooded Strand in a deck with no Islands is not a blue source.

Mana symbols overstate a lot of lands here. Skycloud Expanse prints white and blue and makes neither alone. Cabal Coffers and Gaea's Cradle make nothing on an empty board. The Tainted cycle is colorless until a Swamp is out. Anything excluded from a count is listed above it with the reason.

The land-drop panel is exact, not an estimate. It reads Karsten's 2017 hypergeometric table for the probability of playing a land on each of your first turns, on the play, under his standard mulligan rule, at whatever land count you pasted. It is deliberately not a single recommendation: he showed that a deck needing three lands to operate wants a different number from a low-curve deck, and noted himself that there is no scientific reason to prefer 83.5 percent over 80 or 87. The numbers let you make that call rather than making it for you. The toggle switches between playing and drawing first; every figure is a few points higher on the draw, since you have seen one more card.

One thing the panel does not do is adjust for cantrips. It reads the table at the land count you typed, and a deck full of cheap card draw effectively runs more lands than that number suggests, since each cantrip digs you toward your next drop. Karsten's own land-count formula accounts for this: lands = 19.59 + 1.90 times your average mana value, minus 0.28 for each cheap card-draw or mana-ramp spell. A four-cantrip deck is therefore about one land richer than it looks. This applies to replacement cantrips like Opt that draw a card and swap themselves out one-for-one; a dig spell like Impulse that looks at several cards and takes one is card selection rather than replacement, so it does not thin your deck the same way and is a looser fit for the formula. The tool cannot sort this out for you, since it means reading what each card does, so run the adjustment yourself and read the panel at the higher number if you want the fuller picture.

Nonland mana is included. Dorks count half, because they die. Artifact accelerants count three quarters. Mox Diamond counts one. Rituals count zero: Dark Ritual multiplies black you already have, and it will not cast a turn-one Duress.

Four Reflecting Pool read off that data is four sources of every color, wrong by four sources of every color. The tool counts what the card makes in play instead.
